MOXIBUSTION

Herbal medicine is as old as the hills. The same is true of heat therapy. Moxibustion combines the health benefits of these ancient traditional remedies with the principles of acupuncture.

What is moxibustion?

Moxa or mugwort (artemisia vulgaris) is a herb with healing properties. When burned in small quantities, it produces a warming effect; when larger quantities are used it becomes extremely hot. This heat penetrates deep into the body to unblock stagnation, restore a harmonious flow of blood and Qi and bring you back to health.

How is moxibustion applied?

Sometimes I treat with a smouldering moxa stick held over the affected area. Alternatively, I can place small cones of burning moxa directly onto your skin. The method of treatment depends on the nature of your condition and your personal preferences.

Moxibustion can be used in conjunction with acupuncture or independently. Again, the decision is yours.

What does moxibustion treat?

Moxibustion helps to dispel cold and damp from the body. Moxibustion to is particularly effective for the treatment of:

  • rheumatic pain
  • joint and muscle pain
  • menstrual cramps
  • pain resulting from an injury, such as whiplash
  • depleted energy, perhaps as a result of stress, fatigue or illness

An extra benefit of moxibustion

If you so wish, I can train you to apply moxa at home to supplement your treatment and hasten your recovery.
